Are you Over Training your Abs?

There is no doubt that people are crazy about abs these days! Magazines, diets and workout programmes all emphasise the good old six pack. Unfortunately like any muscle in the body you can over train the abdominals, especially the superficial rectus abdominis muscle. Constantly flexing the abs with sit ups and crunches can have an effect on how the rest of the body functions. Over training the abs can….

  • Create poor posture
  • Cause poor diaphragmatic breathing which can impair respiration
  • Create muscle imbalances between the hip flexors and the transverse abdominals which can generate lower back pain

Abdominal Stretch

So how can you keep your abs healthy and functional? The answer is simple, stretching! Just like any muscle in the body stretching the abs is an important part of a well balanced training plan. To stretch the abs simply use one of the large fitballs/swiss balls around the gym. Lie across the ball facing the ceiling and hold this stretch for a couple of minutes. Not only will this stretch release the abdominals it will also stretch the large anterior chain muscles such as the hip and neck flexors. This will help keep your neck, shoulders and back healthy as well as your abs!
