Training Tip- Benefits of yin yoga

Chiropractor Brisbane CBD. Chiropractor BrisbaneThere are many forms of yoga which all benefit the body in different ways. A form of yoga that I have recently discovered is yin yoga. Yin yoga differs from more dynamic forms of yoga, ie: Bikram or ashtanga yoga, as it is a much slower style with most poses been performed on the floor or in a seated position. The poses mainly work on the tendons, ligaments and fascia of the hips, legs and lower body. This enables a release of muscle and joint tension in the lower body as well as improving flexibility and circulation. Here are a couple of benefits of yin yoga.

  1. Release muscle tension. Yin yoga poses are typically held for 2-5 minutes which allows for a very deep stretch. Yin yoga is very beneficial for people who carry lot of tension in their hips and lower back.
  2. Reduces stress. The slow pace and long holds in yin yoga helps create stillness and mindfulness. Mindfulness has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety as well as improve concentration and mental clarity.
  3. Compliments other forms of training. Most forms of typical training and workouts these days mainly compromise a lot of concentric muscle contraction. Weight training, cardio and sports specific training will cause muscle tension and tightness to develop. Over time this can lead to restricted movement, pain and potentially injury. Yin yoga is very complimentary of high intensity forms of training as the long yoga poses are specifically designed to release muscle tension. This slower form of training is also a great way to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system which will enhance the recovery and repair systems in the body.
